Expert Overview I’m Head of Department for one of the top 5 Earth Science University Departments in the UK with particular interests in geophysics, computer modelling (reproducing the physics involved in natural processes – ie earthquakes, avalanches, etc) and the "Rare Earth Hypothesis" – ie the idea that habitable planets may be extremely unusual. Personally I don’t think we’ll ever find or contact another civilization. I’ve published 50 papers and a textbook and undertaken £1.2 million pounds worth of research . I’m also a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and of the Geological Society.
