After a prolonged stretch in teaching, I became a full-time writer in 2001. I’m passionate about the English language and the way it has evolved over the years and have written several reference books & style guides. I used to be a stickler for rules but know you can’t control language - as can be seen in rise of texting. What’s key is to respect the people you’re addressing. I also write historical crime fiction (Elizabethan to the Victorian period). I was chairman of the UK Crime Writers' Association in 2007/8 and did a stint as 'Doctor Word' on Radio 4's Word of Mouth programme.
