Expert Overview After a childhood in Rhodesia, I worked all over Africa as a rural development officer for 18 years, living with communities in the bush, forests and deserts. In the 1970s drought in the Danakil Desert, I helped build hundreds of wells, dams, irrigation & clean water systems across West & Central Africa. I now write about the people, culture & customs of communities I lived with – from female circumcision and the treatment of handicapped children (seen as the embodiment of evil spirits) to daily eating practices, etc. I retrained as an industrial psychologist and now run my own consultancy.
